What is Truth and Reconciliation Day?
Established as a statutory holiday on September 30, Truth and Reconciliation Day encourages Canadians to recognize and reflect on this dark chapter in history, and to engage in actions that promote healing and reconciliation. It is a day to listen to Indigenous voices, understand their experiences, and commit to making positive changes in the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.
Truth and Reconciliation Day, also known as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, is observed in Canada to honour lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities. This day is a time for reflection on the painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools, where Indigenous children were forcibly taken from their families to assimilate into Canadian society, often experiencing abuse and neglect.
